Five Lessons Learnt From Our Road Trip

After our recent road trip to France I’ve learnt that any long drive requires serious essentials to get you through! If you have read about our ski holiday (if you haven’t you can here) you will know that we got stuck in traffic which meant we were in the car for 11 hours, majority of which was spent stuck on a motorway, which of course meant we had nowhere to go, no toilet or food breaks and I spent the majority of the time thinking about what I would do different the next time we take a road trip!

Snacks/water

We did not prepare with snacks at all… we had a packet of satsumas, thats it! I was so HANGRY by the end of our trip, and that isn’t good for anyone! Next time I’m in the car for more than a few hours I am defiantly going to go get some car friendly snacks before we go! Luckily we did have a bottle of water each which we made last all day but again next time we are on a long journey I will make sure we have a pack of water bottles with us!

Driver Friendly games

I didn’t want to sit and watch my Ipad or read a book the whole way or basically do any fun things to keep myself entertained whilst Adrian sat and did all the driving. However there aren’t many games to play that will not distract the driver which will take their eyes off the road. I had a look on the Apple app store on our way to Eurotunnel and download a general movie trivia game, so I just had to read out the answers and quiz him which was fun so would definitely recommend looking into games like that! Another fun game you can both play is the “yes or no game” (I think this game has lot of different names but thats what I call it) where you have to think or a person and the other player has the guess what it is but the questions have to be answered with a yes or no. If you are going to be in a car for over 6 hours you need to keep yourselves entertained!

Make a playlist

I wish I had pre made a playlist with a mix of music we both like as we didn’t really think and just stuck the radio on… but after a few hours of listening to the same adverts in-between songs I was ready to just sit in silence! So we ended up taking it in turns listening to each others phone, but it would have been so much easier if we just had a big playlist of all our favourite music on one phone/Ipad. To me background music in essential!

Chargers

If you are using your phone for maps, music, games etc then make sure you have an in-car charger… you do not want to be worrying about you phone dying on you when you need it the most!

Make sure your cosy & comfy

I wore jeans on the way there and just could not get comfy! So on the way back I just wore some cosy loungewear (I was so tempted to wear PJs as you don’t really see anyone on the way home)  & also wore a my huge scarf which is great to double up as a big blanket and get yourself nice and snug! I also brought with me my neck pillow that I normally use when I fly. I am so glad that I did as it was great to use when I wanted a little nap after our early start!

I hope this helps you for any long road trips you might have coming up!

Thank you for reading.
