It is that time of the year where I have been slacking when it comes to choosing the healthy meal options and the fitness plan went out the window the second I saw mince pies grace our shelves. If like me you plan to jump back on the gym/healthy eating bandwagon now it’s January I thought I’d share some of my tips that help get me motivated for a workout!
1) Treat yourself to some new workout clothes
As soon as I buy new clothing I have the urge to wear it straight away, I can’t keep it saved up for a rainy day… so as soon as I treat myself to new gym clothes it actually makes me excited to get out the house to workout in my new gym gear! I also think its important to have a decent pair of trainers as if you plan on doing a lot of fitness you want your feet to be supported to prevent any injuries!
2) Get some inspo from Social Media
The world of social media is an amazing platform to get inspiration for the gym as there are so many fitness accounts to follow to get ideas of what workouts you can do in the gym and at home. You don’t necessarily need to pay for a gym membership or a PT to get fit. YouTube for example has hundreds of different fitness accounts that can provide easy and effect workouts to follow from your home if you don’t want to pay for a gym, to more machine type workouts if you do have a gym membership. Instagram is one of my favourite places to look for gym workouts and it’s now so easy to save them and look at them when needed! Pinterest again is a great way to save different fitness ideas; my fitness board has started to grow in the past few weeks ready to try now it’s January…
3) Be brave and join a class
It can be very daunting to attend a gym/local fitness class alone, I joined my gym almost 3 years ago and for the first few weeks I was too scared to try a gym class by myself as I had never done it before and wasn’t sure what to expect. However I made myself go to a Legs, Bums & Tums class and from then on I was hooked! Having a teacher telling you what to do and showing you how to do it gave me more confidence to do my own weighted workouts outside the classes rather than sticking to the treadmill. It also gives you a kick up the butt if you are not really in the mood for a workout because once your there, being in a room for of people doing the same thing really motivations you to keep up!
4) Find a gym partner
I enjoy going to the gym far more if I have someone to go with, it gives me more confidence to try new things I’d be too scared to try alone in a gym full of people. Also if you’ve made a commitment to go with someone, I feel like I cant let them down, regardless of how little motivation I have! I’m also a bit of a chatter box too, having someone to chat to makes the whole thing more fun, plus it means you cant cut your workout short if you get tired!
5) Don’t be too hard on yourself
Don’t set yourself crazy workout plans which are going to be impossible to manage. If your new to it all, start with trying to workout 2/3 times a week and slowly increase it. If you want to set yourself a goal weight then don’t try and do it all in a month, pace yourself! Working out should be fun and enjoyable, don’t over do it and cause yourself an injury or set unrealistic goals which will leave you down if you don’t reach them in a few weeks!
